Chef owners Mike and Sam run this lovely village pub on the green in Barkston near Grantham, amid Lincolnshire's sublime cornfields. It’s warmly lit and with wooden tables, leather wingback chairs and solid slate floors. The homely knick-knacks on the bookshelves lend a sense of familiarity and make you feel very at home.
Nibble on olives and fresh bread in the bright conservatory, sup a hand-pulled pint of craft ale by the crackling wood-burner or take your coffee or vino into the well-tended garden, brushed with birdsong and awash with country air. The menu is a notch up from pub grub. Try the prawn and crab Thai salad or homemade pâté to start; the beer-battered salmon or twice-cooked belly pork and roasted apples for mains. Finish off with a choc-dipped meringue with berry compôte. Keep your eyes peeled for deer if you stroll through Belton Woods as a digestif. Booking advised if you'd like a dog-friendly bar table.
