A1

An ideal pit stop at just a minute’s drive from the A1, and a cut above your average pub food. Tasty starters (duck spring rolls, black pudding and pulled pork bonbons, moules marinière with fennel, even snails bourguignon) are followed by imaginative mains, from Korean BBQ rump steak to steak pies, asparagus and mascarpone ravioli to the eponymous shoulder of mutton, slow cooked for hours. Among the usual suspects on the dessert menu are sparks of inspiration like the blackcurrant sorbet and poached pear and lemon tart.

There’s a cosiness in the dusky lighting, tartan carpets, inviting nooks and open fires in winter. Tables are spread over several levels, a product of 400 years of history, and serving staff ferry plates to them with friendly smiles.

If you’re travelling with four-legged friends, there’s a surfeit of footpaths and bridleways fanning out from the village where you can glimpse signs of its copper-mining past.
