Vegetarian or vegan options
Serving fresh, made-to-order food in the Leicestershire wilds, the Black Bull is a charming thatched pub overlooking a patch of allotments and the Rutland countryside. A firm village hub, the atmosphere is jolly and down-to-earth: kids, dogs and walking boots are welcome.
Sit at one of the pavement tables to eat your lunch and you can watch red kites wheeling in the sky, or simply sprawl on a comfortable sofa by the fire. Portions are generous and the flavours fresh. Lunch on a filled baguette – perhaps bacon and halloumi or roast beef with horseradish mayo – or try a bowl of vegan chilli or a home-cooked steak and ale pie. The evening menu takes the range up a notch, but remember to save space for pudding – the sticky toffee with butterscotch sauce is unmissable. Dietary requirements are cheerfully accommodated.
You’ll find countless footpaths to explore on the doorstep should you need some digestive fresh air.
