Recycling/sustainability practices
Sustainable living is the watchword at the fabulous Cross Lanes Organic Farm, set on the theatrical A66, which links the glorious North Pennines to the Lake District. Owners Peter and Sue have woven eco-principles into the very fabric of the business. Sheep occasionally graze on the meadow-turfed roof, the compost loo is thatched with heather, solar panels heat the water, toilet doors are made from recycled plastic bottles and straw bales line the building.
The restaurant serves a wide range of delicious meals using organic, fresh, wild, local and home-grown ingredients. Home-cured bacon and homemade sausages feature on the breakfast menu; koftas, salads and wood-fired pizzas at lunch; cakes and scones for tea. The shop has a butcher’s counter, deli, bakery and a craft section, all focused on local producers and ethical ranges.
Three infamous resident geese will entertain children if they tire of the sturdy, wooden adventure playground.
