A model country pub with a relaxed upmarket vibe, the Olive Branch is as comfortable as a slipper. Formed in 1890 when three labourers' cottages were knocked together, it's since been lovingly developed by owners Sean, Ben and Marcus. Guests can borrow wellies at the front door or blankets to stave off evening chills; chestnuts roast on the winter fire. Outside, the cottage garden has burgeoning borders, beautifully decorated heated gazebos and a vine-covered terrace.
Great lunches and dinners are crafted from the best seasonal produce the kitchen can find, enhanced with paddock produce including beetroot, radishes, rhubarb and nasturtiums. Dine on tastebud-tingling dishes such as charred Cornish mackerel with oyster mayonnaise, lightly-smoked sea trout, or celeriac risotto with baked apple and pickled fennel. Cocktails are made with garden herbs. Loot the dinky shop for local swag including recipe books, restaurant wines, local woodwork and jars of beef dripping.
Six luxurious bedrooms (plus the homemade black pudding that accompanies the breakfast) make this an ideal overnight stop.
