A model country pub with a relaxed upmarket vibe, the Olive Branch is as comfortable as a slipper. The pub was formed in 1890 when three cottages built to house farm labourers were knocked together. Since 1999 it has been lovingly developed by owners Sean, Ben and Marcus. A line of pegged wellies stands at the front door for guests to borrow; there’s a help-yourself basket of blankets to stave off evening chills; and chestnuts roast on the fire in winter. Outside, the cottage garden with burgeoning borders is set with beautifully decorated heated gazebos, beyond the vine covered terrace.
Great lunches and dinners are crafted from the best seasonal produce the kitchen team can lay their hands on, supplemented by produce from the paddock, including beetroot, radishes, rhubarb and nasturtiums. Dine on tastebud-tingling dishes such as charred Cornish mackerel with oyster mayonnaise, or perhaps a lightly smoked sea trout, cucumber and apple, or celeriac risotto with baked apple and pickled fennel. Cocktails are made with herbs from the garden. If you like what you taste, loot the dinky shop for local swag including recipe books, restaurant wines, local woodwork and jars of beef dripping.
Six luxurious bedrooms opposite the pub, as well as homemade black pudding with breakfast, make this an ideal overnight stop if you’re on a long journey.
