A model country pub with a relaxed upmarket vibe, the Olive Branch is as comfortable as a slipper. The pub was formed in 1890 when three cottages built to house farm labourers were knocked together. Since 1999 it has been lovingly developed by owners Sean, Ben and Marcus. A line of pegged wellies stand at the front door for guests to borrow; there’s a help-yourself basket of blankets to stave off evening chills; chestnuts roast on the fire in winter. Outside, a lush lawn is fringed with burgeoning borders beyond the pergola, heaven on summery days.
Great lunches and dinners are crafted from the best seasonal produce the kitchen team can lay their hands on, perhaps a lightly smoked sea trout, cucumber and apple, or lamb rump and belly with ewe’s milk curd. Cocktails are made with herbs from the paddock. If you like what you taste, loot the dinky shop for local swag including recipe books, restaurant wines, local woodwork and jars of beef dripping.
