For the warmest of country welcomes, look no further than the Hay Barn Café. The ladies who work here are indefatigably friendly and don’t bat an eyelid at messy children, muddy paws and muddy footwear. They’re expert bakers to boot, and serve their warm scones fresh from the oven; try the cherry and almond if there on the right day, always with local jam and Chantilly cream.
The temptingly laden shelves at the back are irresistible: local produce like pickles, plum bread, biscuits, pressed apple juice, honey and real ales, ciders and gins.
Homemade quiches, filled rolls and tasty sandwiches are on the lunch menu; fresh fruit tarts are apricot-glazed to perfection. Prices are reasonable and the coffee is smooth. Tall red-bricked walls shelter the gravelled, suntrap courtyard; bright plants and sage-coloured furniture add colour and charm. This is a lovely spot to listen to the chirrup of birds over a pot of tea or generous Hay Barn breakfast.
