On your travels in Northumberland, you will see W. S. Robson’s honey for sale in farm shops. Most outlets stock the solid heather variety; harder to source are tubs of their intensely fragrant and runny flower comb honey. For this sensory delight, you may need to go direct to the source, high above the wooded slopes of the River Tweed. A short walk from the early 19th-century suspension bridge that gives the farm its name, Mr Robson’s shop sells beeswax beauty products, polish, candles – and, of course, honey.
Outside you will see a double-decker bus, now a tea room run by the farmer’s daughter, Frances. The interior of this Café Bus will take you back to the 1950s with its gingham curtains and original aluminium-framed bus seats. Farm produce is used wherever it tastes good; try honey flapjacks, honey lattes and heather honey ice cream made by Doddington Dairy. A lady in the local village bakes many of the cakes, including a honey and beer sponge.
